Submission Underground 28 delivered the same format that fans of Chael Sonnen’s brainchild have come to expect, but with one minor change. This marked the very first time that a gi match has been contested in the SUG cage as Aaron Tiegs managed to finish Guilherme Vasconcelos in EBI overtime using a lapel choke from the back. This is one of the very few times that EBI overtime has been used in a gi match and it was immediately apparent that gifting the back position to an opponent is a virtual death sentence when wearing a gi.
Earlier on in the event was one of the main attractions, as UFC title-contender Kevin Lee made his professional grappling debut against Bellator veteran Cris Lencioni. In the end Lee couldn’t really get anything going during the regulation time period despite outweighing his opponent by a significant margin and ended up losing by fastest escape time in EBI overtime. The main event then saw a tough match between Andy Varela and promising prospect Haisam Rida, where Varela managed to sink in the choke to take the win in EBI overtime.
