Ralph Gracie recently appeared on the Pura Connection podcast and shared a crazy story from the short time he spent in prison recently. He was sentenced to 6 months in prison for assault on January 20th, 2021, over two years after the original incident took place. The actual assault itself took place all the way back at the 2018 edition of the IBJJF no gi world championship, when a business dispute that he had with fellow gym-owner Flavio Almeida got out of hand. It quickly escalated to a physical altercation and footage went viral of Ralph Gracie assaulting Almeida.
Although he was sentenced to 6 months, Gracie was actually released early and returned to regular life. Despite only spending a short time in prison in the end, Ralph Gracie still had some crazy experiences behind bars and he was happy to share one particular story (rough translation from Portuguese):
“I went to a cell that was one of the bosses of a gang, only we were in the part where there were more people together and a guy went there, cleaned his sink and toilet, he was alone in the cell. I didn’t know the politics of the place, I put the p*** out and p*ssed there, the Mexican came and said I was disrespecting him, and then we argued.”
“Another thing is you can’t call the guy in jail a b*tch, and I called him that. He kept looking at me, so I asked him what he was going to do. The guy who was with me, told me at the time not to say that. And he explained to me that if they knew I called him a ‘b*tch’ and the guy didn’t do anything, he was f*cking f*cked. In those cases, he’s got to get (whoever cursed him) or he’s going to get it from the others.”
