Quintet Fight Night 5 brought team grappling to Tokyo again, along with another edition of Kazushi Sakuraba’s latest invention, the “Ironman” format. Team Wolf came into the tournament with high hopes of pulling off the upset and taking home the victory, but were held in an incredibly even match with Team Carpe Diem with five consecutive draws before Carpe Diem were declared the winners by Judge’s Decision. The trend of drawing continued for a while but a single submission managed to be enough to secure the victory for Team Tokoro Plus a 2nd when they fought Team One Hundred in the opening round.

The final then produced only one more submission win as Team Tokoro Plus a 2nd took home the title of Quintet Fight Night 5 winners. The result of low submission finish rates seems to be common among team grappling events lately, although there’s no clear reason why this might be the case. In the Ironman match, Sakuraba emerged victorious over Takashi Sugiura 1-0 despite leglocks not being allowed.
