The Ocean BJJ Pro Championship came to an end on September 21st, 2024 with this year’s final and the event produced some amazing results. There were several standout performances over the course of almost 8 hours of elite grappling in Cagliari, Italy. The lineup was fantastic so it was pretty clear from the start that it was going to be an action-packed event, but not many people would have predicted just how many submission finishes there would have been. Ocean BJJ used a unique ruleset that rewarded submission attempts with points before looking at traditional point-scoring positions and it was a big success in terms of incentivising the finish.
There was two four-person women’s BJJ tournaments taking place alongside the larger men’s brackets, and they were actually both won by the same woman. Gamila Kanew won two of the Ocean BJJ Trials in different weight classes and earned a spot in both brackets, and she stormed to victory in both. She submitted both of her opening round opponents in pretty quick fashion before winning a pair of tough decisions in her final matches at lightweight and heavyweight. With a perfect 4-0 record over the course of the night, Kanew left with both of the promotion’s inaugural titles and made a big name for herself.
Pawel Jaworski attempted the same feat by competing in both the under and over 80kg men’s divisions and although he wasn’t able to win either, he also made a big statement. Jaworski submitted Espen Mathiesen and beat Tommy Langaker by decision to make his way into the final rounds of both brackets, before going out in the semi-final at under 80kg and the quarter-final at over 80kg. Moritz Kollensperger also earned two big wins of his own at over 80kg, making him the only other person outside the early favorites to make it to the semi-finals.
Kollensperger only lost to Sebastian Rodriguez and Jaworski was taken out by Pedro Dias in the over 80kg division, but both of those men also lost in turn to the eventual champion. Luccas Lira emerged victorious at over 80kg with an impressive three heel hook wins before beating Rodriguez by decision in the final. The under 80kg division saw Jaworski lose to Tarik Hopstock, while the other semi-final was where Fabyury Khrysthyan got a huge win over MMA veteran Marcin Held. Hopstock then won a very difficult final match against Khrysthyan in order to secure the title in that division.
