Famous actor Wagner Moura has just been promoted to brown belt in BJJ by the legendary coach Rigan Machado after years of training in the sport. Moura is a well-established actor in his native Brazil has been one of the country’s most popular actors for quite some time, but he broke through in the US after years at the top of the industry there. He broke through to the wider consciousness when he portrayed Captain Roberto Nascimento in the Brazilian film ‘Elite Squad’ in 2007, and his popularity has only grown since then.
He played the character once again in the sequel, but fans in the US will probably know him better for his portrayal of Columbian drug lord Pablo Escobar in the hit Netflix series ‘Narcos’. Not only was the series incredibly popular, but Moura’s role in particular became one of the most notable elements. He even was even nominated for a Golden Globe in 2016 for his work on the show, becoming the first Brazilian in 14 years to receive this level of recognition. He later returned to the role for ‘Narcos: Mexico’ but he has spent more time on other projects since the original series came to an end.
Throughout this incredibly busy schedule, Wagner Moura found the time to get involved in both BJJ and Muay Thai. Wagner Moura has continued training in combat sports for many years and the fact that he’s recently been promoted to brown belt in BJJ by Rigan Machado is a testament to his skills on the mat. He’s one of many famous actors to dedicate a substantial amount of their time to training BJJ, but he’s certainly spent longer on the mats than many of them ever will.
