Mica Galvao has just announced that he has suffered an MCL injury and will now be out of competition for the immediate future. The injury actually occurred in a recent match with Kaynan Duarte in the quarter-final of the absolute grand prix at BJJ Stars 10: Battlefield. Duarte was actually disqualified from the match and the tournament because he reaped Galvao’s knee, and this movement is what actually caused the MCL injury. The popping sound could be heard on the live broadcast and it became immediately obvious that Galvao had suffered some kind of damage.
Galvao was declared the winner by disqualification and he decided to continue on in the tournament, but he went out in the next round against Fellipe Andrew anyway. Now Mica Galvao has actually had his knee examined and the injury to his MCL has become apparent. He confirmed that he’s attempting to avoid surgery by employing proper injury rehabilitation methods, but this is never a guarantee of success and he’ll know more in the coming days. The original statement he gave was in Portuguese, and the English translation can be found below:
“According to the MRI I had today I have a medial collateral ligament damage. This injury was caused last BJJ Stars and will likely put me out of competition for 8-12 weeks. Tomorrow I go for another evaluation to see what can be done. No surgery at first if I do recovery right But I’ll only be sure in the next few days. I just want to thank you for caring and say that everything is fine. It’s all right though! I’m very happy, really happy with everything God has done in my life and with the affection I received at the event. You guys were amazing! I want to say that I don’t regret fighting this GP one bit and am already looking forward to the next one I received a lot of messages from people worried about me but don’t worry, I’m fine, this was the profession I chose and soon I’m back to doing what I love most in life which is to fight for you. As for Kaynan (Duarte) I ask please don’t put any blame on him. No one but him knows what actually happened there. So I’d rather believe it wasn’t intentional than just accuse. Who has never been wronged by being accused of something they didn’t do? It hurt, don’t it? So all I ask is that you give a vote of confidence and put yourself in his shoes. So if you really like my work please don’t do it to him. After all 8 or 12 weeks goes by quickly and I definitely needed a vacation. I’m going to take the opportunity to develop in a way I’ve never developed in my life and present to you a version that hasn’t been seen yet.”
Kaynan Duarte also commented on the news and gave Mica Galvao the best wishes for his recovery after the unfortunate injury that he suffered during their match:
“First of all, I wish you a good and speedy recovery Mica, soon you’ll be back in activity, unfortunately it wasn’t the way I wanted it to end. Thank you for your stance and respect your career and your father. Get well soon.”
