Medusa 6 took place on December 13th, 2024 as part of the first Jiu-Jitsu Overdose event and the results definitely did not disappoint. There were two tournaments set in the featherweight and strawweight divisions, and each one had a great lineup with some of the best female grapplers around. There was a ton of action and even some upsets along the way, along with some predictably impressive performances from a top contender. The strawweight division in particular didn’t go how anyone would have predicted in the end, as neither of the two top favorites were able to make it to the final.
Valerie Wong was on fire right from the start as she beat top contender Kiaya Jackson in the very first round by outworking her in EBI overtime. Wong won her second match by submission to book her place in the final, while the other side of the bracket saw the other favorite Lauren Sears falling in the semi-final to Liz Tracy. Tracy looked good coming into the final but Wong proved that it was her night to shine, as she got her second submission win of the night against her. Those results secured Wong the strawweight title at Medusa 6 and it was a truly phenomenal display that should earn a few more opportunities in the near-future.
The featherweight division was comparatively predictable in the end, but no less exciting. Zaira Cousins put in some great work in both her opening round and semi-final matches, showing off some excellent EBI overtime skills by submitting both opponents with an armbar in overtime. The other side of the bracket was much more decisive, as it was where the favorite Aislinn O’Connell made her run to the final. She submitted both of her opponents with rear-naked chokes before delivering the exact same end to Cousins as well. O’Connell is now a two-time champion on the promotion’s mats, as she had already won the bantamweight title in another tough tournament back at Medusa 2.
