Mayssa Bastos has just won her rematch with Danielle Kelly at ONE Fight Night 26 on December 6th, 2024. The stakes were very high, as Bastos’ atomweight world title was on the line and Kelly was eager for revenge after losing the title to her in their last match. It was always going to be a challenging match and Kelly is notoriously tough to submit, but Bastos put on an excellent performance. Kelly scored an early trip but Bastos was able to scramble to top position and start passing, getting through to side control after a little over two minutes of action in the match.
Kelly escaped and started to work her own passing game, putting Bastos under pressure and threatening her with a stack pass. Bastos managed to attack Kelly’s legs though and although she couldn’t score a catch, she used Kelly’s defense to attack a choke instead. Kelly escaped again and no catch was awarded, but Bastos leapt onto the legs again and this time she had much more success. She locked up a heel hook and even exposed the heel, cranking on it to try to force Kelly to tap. Kelly survived but that action in the last 20 seconds was enough to earn Bastos the win and the atomweight title.
Although the stakes were highest in the match between Bastos and Kelly, there were another two grappling matches taking place at ONE Fight Night 26 too. One of the first matches on the card saw top Canadian competitor Dante Leon getting an impressive submission win over Bruno Pucci after just a little over two minutes of action. Another elite grappler took on an MMA veteran shortly after that, but this was also a battle between two different generations. Cole Abate got the submission win over Shinya Aoki, locking up a heel hook and securing a $50,000 ‘Performance of the Night’ bonus in the process.
