Luke Griffith just put in a flawless performance at the IBJJF No Gi World Championship 2023, as he won double gold in the adult brown belt divisions. Griffith absolutely dominated both the ultra-heavyweight and the absolute division, submitting every single one of his opponents at the event. It showed some great improvement on Griffith’s part too, as this is actually the second time that he’s competed in the brown belt division at this event. In 2022, he won the super-heavyweight division but had to settle for a silver medal in the absolute after losing to Steffen Banta in the final.
Griffith has been in incredible form throughout the year and finishing with a perfect record at the most prestigious no gi tournament available this year is the icing on the cake for him. He almost completed a clean sweep of all the major IBJJF no gi events, with the exception being the IBJJF Brazilian National Championship. The only reason that he wasn’t able to add that title to his collection is because he did not enter the event. He did win double gold in the no gi editions of the IBJJF Pan Championship and the IBJJF European Championship prior to this though.
Griffith submitted every single one of his opponents in the brown belt divisions of all three of these tournaments this year, and he also managed to win the under 99kg division at the ADCC European, Middle-Eastern and African Trials too. It’s been a fantastic year for Griffith in competition and not only has he proven that he belongs at the very highest level of competition, but he’s shown clear development over the course of the year as well. He has earned his place at ADCC 2024, so it’ll be interesting to see how he fares there and in the other competitions he enters next year.
