The IBJJF Master World Championship 2024 took place across August 29th to 31st, 2024 and it attracted some of the greatest competitors in the history of the sport. With the tournament only open to grapplers over the age of 30, the black belt divisions are always full of incredible legends. One of the biggest storylines coming into the event was the fact that two men were looking to make history by winning both the adult and master world championship in the same year. In the end only one of them was able to achieve that feat and after winning the master 1 light-featherweight division, Carlos ‘Bebeto’ Oliveira secured his place in the history books.
There was also the fact that MMA legend Demetrious Johnson had signed up to compete in the master 2 featherweight division, where he would be making his debut at black belt. It was a huge bracket and although Johnson won his first three matches, he went out in the quarter-final and it was Osvaldo ‘Queixinho’ Moizinho who won gold in that division. There was plenty of other big names competing in other light divisions; as Joao Miyao won the master 1 roosterweight division and Thiago Macedo took won at featherweight. Jaime Canuto and Manuel Ribamar also stood out for their winning performances in the master 1 middleweight and medium-heavyweight divisions too.
Natasha Druggan stood out in the brown belt brackets, as she won both the women’s featherweight and absolute divisions at master 1. There were even more elite female competitors at black belt, particularly in the heavier divisions. Luciana Mota won the medium-heavyweight bracket and Melissa Stricker won at heavyweight, after sharing the final with her Alliance Jiu-Jitsu teammate and fellow top competitor Elizabeth Mitrovic. The biggest title in the master 1 divisions went to Carina Santi, as she won the absolute division after taking bronze at super-heavyweight. Santi lost to the eventual winner of that weight class, Tayane Porfirio.
The other age brackets featured plenty of big names too, with Ricardo Evangelista winning a tough master 2 ultra-heavyweight division. The women’s master 2 brackets saw Cleidiane Ferreira winning at heavyweight while Jennifer Case stood on top of the podium at both super-heavyweight and in the absolute. The older age brackets at the IBJJF Master World Championship 2024 featured some of the biggest legends in the sport too, with Wellington ‘Megaton’ Dias winning gold in the master 6 lightweight division and the master 7 heavyweight division being won by Gokor Chivichyan.
