Everyone knows that John Danaher routinely gives out valuable grappling knowledge and opinions on a regular basis, but now he’s decided to name the one submission that everyone should know. He’s shared several secrets in the past that other coaches would likely have held on to and kept specifically for an instructional or their own students. These insights include things like his general approach to open guard and how to use leg attacks to set up the rest of your arsenal from there.
Considering that John Danaher has always shown a preference for leg attacks and has even recommended these as the best way to overcome a significant size or strength difference, his pick for one submission that everyone should know will likely come as bit of a surprise. Instead of heelhooks, he’s opted for the Guillotine as the likely answer. His reasoning is pretty solid however, as he explains that it’s one of the few submissions that is actually available from either top or bottom position, and standing or the ground.
Danaher shared his opinion in a post to his official Instagram account where he explained his reasoning in the usual verbose and detailed style. Interestingly, fellow BJJ black belt and podcast host Lex Fridman commented and shared that he was actually in complete agreement with his assessment:
“If I could master one submission, it would be the guillotine. Just as you said, the number of places it’s available is probably more than any other submission.”
