Joe Rogan recently sat down with perhaps one of the biggest legends in the entire history of wrestling, Dan Gable, with the conversation eventually turning towards Jiu-Jitsu and one man in particular, Gordon Ryan. It’s understandable given that Rogan is a black belt in BJJ along with being the voice of the UFC for decades now, and Gable is one of the greatest wrestlers of all time who has been open about discussing MMA and other forms of grappling in the past. Once the conversation turned to BJJ, Rogan was quick to sing the praises of Ryan to Gable:
“I’m gonna tell you something about Jiu-Jitsu. There’s one team, the Renzo Gracie team out of New York City that is.. They dominate, in particular the guys that are coached by this guy John Danaher. They were in town this past weekend for a Jiu-Jitsu match and there’s a guy named Gordon Ryan, he’s the pound for pound greatest of all time. He has a hard time finding matches…”
He also explained some of the reasons behind his opinion, citing his recent demolition of Vagner Rocha at Who’s Number One as one of the high-points of his career. He also explained a little of the training methodology of Danaher and how the Danaher Death Squad don’t actually have rest days at all. Instead, they train every single day and if they feel a little beaten up, they’ll roll lightly and make that day an active recovery day instead, allowing them to constantly hone their skills.
