JitsCast #54 features Aurelie Le Vern, who is the top French Jiu-Jitsu competitor in the world right now. Le Vern found the sport relatively late in her life compared to most competitors in the modern era but she quickly found success, progressing through the belt ranks and winning the IBJJF World Championship at every level. She was promoted to black belt in 2023 and despite facing veteran competitors, she has already won major IBJJF tournaments in both gi and no gi. She also won the ADCC European Trials 2024, securing her place at the world’s most prestigious no gi grappling tournament.
Jits Magazine spoke to Le Vern about her journey to the top of the sport, and she gave some great insight in to what factors she believes helped her to reach such a high level despite starting the sport later than most top competitors. Le Vern also talked about her very first experiences with grappling when she decided to start taking Judo classes in her home city of Marseilles in France. She then went on to talk about how that ultimately led to her taking up Jiu-Jitsu, after she relocated to French Guiana for work.
Although she spent some time talking about her past, Le Vern is also busy preparing for the biggest single match of her career so far. She’s going to face Raquel Canuto for the inaugural featherweight title at UFC BJJ 4, and the winner there will become the first female champion in the promotion’s history. Le Vern talked about her training camp and the decision to move to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to train at Pyramide Grappling for it. She also explained what she’s been working on, how grappling in the UFC BJJ bowl works, and how she plans to approach the match once the action starts.
