JitsCast #50 features ADCC veteran Sula-Mae Loewenthal as she prepares for the biggest single match of her Jiu-Jitsu career so far. Loewenthal is one of the top BJJ competitors in Europe at the moment and her breakout into the highest level of the sport began when she won the ADCC Asia and Oceania Trials 2024, and her rise has been meteoric since then. Winning that tournament earned her the opportunity to compete at ADCC 2024 and join a select few British grapplers to ever reach that level. That in turn allowed her to get even more opportunities as a professional competitor and she’s since become a frequent face on the Polaris mats.
Jits Magazine spoke to Loewenthal about her rise through the sport and her journey from Australia to London, where she now trains and teaches at Gracie Barra. She also spoke about her experience at ADCC Trials and how she earned her opportunity to compete at ADCC, along with her plans to return for a second attempt next year. Loewenthal also shared some insight on being a female competitor in Europe, where she believes many competitors are on the rise and right on the verge of breaking out to the highest level. She then spoke about her own major competition moment that happened earlier this year, in the female squads match at Polaris 32.
Loewenthal took part in the final match of the night against the opposing team’s captain, Helena Crevar, and came out very aggressively right from the start. Loewenthal overwhelmed Crevar and in the short match, won a clear decision that many people would not have predicted prior to the event. The two women are now set to compete again at Polaris 34 for the featherweight title, and Loewenthal also spoke about her preparation for the rematch. She opened up about her battles with burnout and getting in to a flow state during competition, both of which will be a factor in her attempt to win that match.
