JitsCast #30 features one of the first 10th Planet black belts and one of their most successful competitors, Geo Martinez. Not only is Martinez one of the pioneers of that affiliation but he also rose to the top of the sport remarkably quickly. He was promoted to black belt after just 3 years of training and became one of the quickest in the history of the sport. He proved himself in competition multiple times over during his journey through the colored belt ranks and he immediately established himself as one of the best in the world afterward, winning the inaugural Eddie Bravo Invitational.
Martinez dominated the early years of EBI and won three editions of the tournament across two different weight classes. Martinez also managed to win ADCC Trials around the same time period and has since gone on to compete at ADCC multiple times. Martinez was one of the key figures in the growth of popularity that 10th Planet has experienced over the years and he has featured in many major promotions like Polaris and Quintet. Martinez explained how he was able to reach the rank of black belt so quickly, and what being a part of 10th Planet meant to him.
Martinez also spoke about his experience at EBI 1 and what he’s looking for in the latter stages of his career now. He shared his thoughts on the various different promotions he has competed for in the past and even revealed his battles with competition anxiety in recent years. Martinez also spent some time talking about his first match with Mikey Musumeci, and the upcoming rematch that he has against him. Unfortunately this rematch has since fallen through, as Musumeci withdrew to pursue a different project with the UFC. It should still be going ahead at an undisclosed date in the future though, so Martinez’s thoughts on how he will approach the match are still important.
