JitsCast #28 features Standard Jiu-Jitsu founder and head coach Greg Souders as he prepares for one of the biggest events of his career. Souders has built a fantastic team in a single location through the use of the constraints-led approach to learning, where he forgoes the traditional drilling format that many academies employ. He does not teach techniques through demonstration and repetition like the majority of coaches around the world, and instead he focuses on creating limited live scenarios that allow competitors to learn for themselves. This approach is controversial to say the least, and a number of popular figures in the sport have criticised it and Souders in the past.
JitsMagazine spoke to Souders about his approach to teaching the sport for a small portion of the interview, but most of it focused on other aspects of his career instead. Souders talked about his first foray into Jiu-Jitsu and how he stumbled upon the constraints-led approach to begin with, before discussing his opinions on the current market for instructionals. He talked about what he believes is the optimal way for an instructional to be done, and how that would benefit newer practitioners compared to the current approach that is used by most competitors and coaches who release them for sale.
Souders also reflected on his student Deandre Corbe winning the Sapateiro world championship earlier this year, which led to him talking about his approach to being a cornerman. He’s well-respected for his ability to corner athletes in the moment and he shared some of the rules he sticks to in that situation. Souders then talked about his appointment as the coach for Team Misfits Americas at CJI 2, and his chosen method of selecting the men who will be representing the team. He revealed that he’s inviting prospective team-members down to train with him, ahead of a proper training camp ready for the Craig Jones Invitational this year.
