Jake Shields and Diego Sanchez have been slated to compete against one another in a superfight at High Rollerz 4, with the event taking place across the weekend of February 5th, but airing on February 12th. The event is set to take place in Las Vegas, Nevada and routinely combines Jiu-Jitsu with something else that a surprising number of BJJ competitors are a huge fan of; Marijuana. The winner of this particular superfight gets a swanky new belt made specifically for the event and a literal pound of weed to take home. Considering Jake Shields is good friends with the Diaz brothers, that pound might not last as long as you’d think.
The match will of course be contested without a gi, unsurprising given that both men are MMA fighters first and foremost, and it will be over a single ten-minute round with EBI overtime rules in play should there not be a finish in regulation time. Jake Shields has the superior level of experience coming into the fight as he once came away with an ADCC bronze medal as a BJJ purple belt back in 2005 and has had three more MMA fights than Diego Sanchez, with double the number of submission finishes across that career.
The last time we saw Shields in action was back in 2018 where he went 2-1 in a run at the PFL Welterweight Championship, whereas Sanchez has continued competing in the UFC as recently as September 2020. He was seen in a losing effort against Jake Matthews at UFC 253 and has struggled to put together a streak of wins in his late-thirties.
