The 2021 IBJJF World Championships are over and now that the dust has settled, the results have given us a new generation of world champions just before the year is over. Some familiar faces emerged victorious as Mikey Musumeci earned his fourth consecutive world championship and Felipe Pena claimed the highest honor by winning the absolute division despite finishing third in his own weightclass. They were joined by young prodigies like Erich Munis, who won the Super-Heavyweight division, and Art of Jiu-Jitsu’s Tainan Dalpra, who won the middleweight division in style.
One of the most shocking storylines to emerge from the entire event came from Gabi Garcia however, as she failed to win either her division or the absolute division. While that was surprising enough, she was actually submitted for the first time in well over a decade by Yara Soares, shortly before announcing her retirement from IBJJF competition altogether. In the end it was actually Gabrieli Pessanha who claimed those gold medals in both the women’s Super-Heavyweight and the absolute division, defeating Soares in the final of both.
