The IBJJF Toronto Open 2024 took place on September 14th and 15th, 2024 and there was some serious Canadian talent facing off against top competitors from elsewhere in the world. The first day featured gi divisions and although there was plenty of fantastic grapplers from outside Canada, the local talent took full advantage of the opportunity to prove themselves. That was very clear in the men’s featherweight division in particular, as Valor Boyer was beaten in the final by Delphi Yamber from Cicero Costha Canada. Although there was plenty of other champions from Canada throughout the divisions, the double champion was still one of the visiting competitors.
That man was top Nova Uniao black belt Horlando Monteiro, who made a long journey to compete in the IBJJF Toronto Open 2024 and delivered a flawless performance. He started out the day by winning a gold medal in a tough heavyweight division and even beat Arthan Bandeira in the final to do so. He returned to the mats later in the day to win the absolute division as well, beating a pair of Renzo Gracie Ottawa black belts and finishing with a 5-0 record. The no gi divisions on the second day were pretty quiet, with Valor Boyer and Pierre Olivier-Leclerc getting default golds at featherweight and middleweight respectively.
David Garmo also made an appearance on the second day and he won the heavyweight division before earning a bronze medal in the absolute. Although some of the men’s divisions were pretty busy, there weren’t all that many female BJJ competitors at the event at all. Janine Mutton managed to come away with an impressive haul of four gold medals, although the gi absolute division was the only one where she had matches and the other three were won by default. Shelby Murphey was the only other big name competing and she won the gi light-featherweight division before settling for silver behind Mutton in the absolute.
