The brand new IBJJF event, The Crown, took place on November 19th, 2023 and the results are in for all six of the divisions taking place. There was plenty of exciting matches and slick submission finishes, but there was also a little controversy and some fair criticism coming from the event too. The idea to hold bronze medal matches in four-person tournaments was a strange one to begin with, but it became clear that it wasn’t worth the time when only three of the six bronze medal matches even took place. Two of them were cancelled as a competitor did not take to the mats, but the ultra-heavyweight division is where the controversy took place.
Victor Honorio and Joao Gabriel Rocha met in the opening round match and after neither man could secure a takedown for several minutes, both men were disqualified. This meant that neither of them were eligible to compete any further and the other opening round match was made an automatic final. Erich Munis won that match and the division but it was somewhat anti-climactic that he only had to beat one man to do so. There were plenty of good things to come from the event too though, including Tainan Dalpra enjoying a return to form as he claimed the middleweight title.
Fellipe Andrew was very dominant in the heavyweight division, winning one by submission and the other by a wide points-margin, while Samuel Nagai became the featherweight champion after a pair of wins on advantages. Luiza Monteiro won a pair of convincing matches on points to claim the women’s lightweight title, and there were two storylines happening in the women’s super-heavyweight division. Tayane Porfirio came in on short notice and still made it to the final, but she couldn’t prevent Gabrieli Pessanha from continuing her incredible run in recent years.
