The IBJJF No Gi Pan-Ams 2021 have come to a close and after almost a full week of competitive grappling, we now have a whole new crop of champions to celebrate for the coming year. Perhaps the biggest impression of the event came from the young Elisabeth Clay who walked away with a pair of gold medals after submitting all six of her opponents in both her weight and the absolute division. Lucas ‘Hulk’ Barbosa came away with the gold medal in the male absolute division but fell just short in the final of his own weightclass and took home silver there instead.

There was also an upset in the announcing of the team trophies, a category that is normally won by a small selection of gigantic affiliations spreading across the globe. The adult male section was instead won by Pedigo Submission Fighting, a team that’s only recently shot to fame in the BJJ community but have already become well-known for their phenomenal training routine. One of the more unusual stories from the event came from John Danaher black belt Oliver Taza who was one of the favorites to win his division but didn’t even make it to the podium after being disqualified for smothering his opponent with his hands after taking his back.
