The IBJJF European Championship 2023 came to an end on 29th January, 2023 and as always, the biggest tournament in the continent delivered some fantastic results. There were a few surprises throughout the week but the majority of the divisions went pretty much the same way that fans would have expected when looking at the lineup. Kaynan Duarte had a fantastic showing, winning gold in both the super-heavyweight and the absolute division by beating a number of elite competitors throughout his run through the brackets. He wasn’t the only athlete to stand on the podium twice as Mason Fowler won the ultra-heavyweight division and earning a bronze medal in the absolute, while Rider Zuchi won bronze at heavyweight and silver in the absolute.
When the absolute divisions were confirmed, the winner of the women’s edition seemed much more obvious. Gabrieli Pessanha won the absolute division shortly after her victory at super-heavyweight as predicted, continuing her incredible form into 2023 after dominating the landscape of professional gi competition in 2022. She defeated the middleweight champion Thalyta Silva in the final, while the lightweight and medium-heavyweight champions, Luiza Monteiro and Maria Malyjasiak respectively, shared third-place on the absolute podium.
