The IBJJF Curitiba Spring Open 2024 took place on the weekend of October 12th and 13th, 2024 and some of the best grapplers in Brazil competed in both the gi or no gi divisions. The gi brackets were up on the first day and there was plenty of surprises right from the start. The biggest upset came in the absolute division in fact, where Leonardo Lara came away with the gold medal by beating Anderson Munis. Not only was Munis the ultra-heavyweight silver medalist at the event, but he also won the IBJJF World Championship 2024 at super-heavyweight. Lara on the other hand won a bronze medal at heavyweight in Curitiba, behind silver medalist Vinicius Liberati and champion Leonardo Ferreira.
The champion at super-heavyweight here was Munis’ teammate Luis Oliveira, while their other teammates Rafael Borges and Guilherme Alves won gold medals at middleweight and lightweight respectively. Borges in particular had an impressive performance, as he managed to beat top competitor Yuri Rodrigues in the final. Manoel Junior also made an appearance, but he had to settle for a silver medal at medium-heavyweight behind Luiz Santos. There were a handful of big names competing in the women’s gi divisions too, with Amanda Magda and Marina Carraro standing out in particular. Magda was given a default gold at heavyweight and Carraro won gold at super-heavyweight, before beating Magda in the final of the absolute.
The no gi divisions on day two of the IBJJF Curitiba Spring Open 2024 weren’t quite as busy, but there were still plenty of exciting moments. Leonardo Goncalves came out as the men’s absolute champion, but he had to settle for a silver medal at super-heavyweight behind Julian Stonjek. Anderson Munis made a surprise return too, and he came away with a gold medal in the ultra-heavyweight division this time around. The womens no gi divisions saw Izadora Silva crowned the absolute champion after she settled for a silver medal at super-heavyweight and her teammate Tamiris Silva took gold. Top prospect Franciele Nascimento also stood on the absolute podium in third place, shortly after she was given a default gold at middleweight.
