The IBJJF Vitoria Open 2024 took place on August 3rd and 4th, 2024, and there were a few surprises as the tournament unfolded. The gi divisions took place on the first day of the weekend, and Leandro Lima won the gold medal in the absolute division despite a tough final match against top contender Vinicius Lessa. It was Gabriel Oliveira who took home the bronze medal in the absolute, shortly after he won the ultra-heavyweight division. He had difficult matches in his own weight class too though, as Hygor Brito stood next to him on the podium in the silver medal spot.
The women’s absolute division also produced a surprise winner as well, as Marina Carraro stood on top of the podium after beating Amanda Magda in the final. Neither woman was able to find a match in their actual weight class though, and they each took default golds there. Andressa Tolentino and Jamile Lima were the two bronze medalists in the absolute, with Tolentino earning another bronze at featherweight and Lima winning gold in the middleweight division. Lima also took a default gold in the no gi heavyweight division, and she was just one of many elite grapplers who stepped on the mats on both days.
Vitoria Vieira won the gi lightweight division before taking default gold in the no gi middleweight division, and winning the absolute there too. One of the most impressive performances across the whole weekend of the IBJJF Vitoria Open 2024 came from Gabriel Brod though. Brod won the heavyweight division in both gi and no gi, before winning his third gold medal of the weekend in the no gi absolute division. He fought his way through some tough opposition as well, most notably in the absolute where he had to beat Lessa in the final to win the bracket.
