Gordon Ryan has been open about suffering with an unknown stomach condition for quite some time now, and he has explained how it has effected his ability to gain muscle mass over the last few years. It’s no secret that he’s been trying incredibly hard to get some answers as to exactly what was wrong with him so that he can finally start to receive effective treatment and fix the issues he has. Now, after years of tests it appears that he finally has a name for exactly what’s wrong with him and he can start the road to recovery.
Gordon Ryan revealed in a post on his official Instagram account that he has now been diagnosed with Gastroparesis, a condition that means that the stomach does not empty fully after eating and leaves food behind. This means that when the next meal is eaten, it’s essentially over-filling the stomach and is what leads to extreme nausea and the uncomfortable feeling of being completely full despite not over-eating. Considering that Ryan has put in a lot of effort over the past few years to gain muscle mass and move up in weight categories, it makes sense then that this task has compounded the issues he already has, which is why they’ve only taken a debilitating effect in recent years.
As Ryan explains, he could simply return to a lower-calorie diet and start fasting in order to help naturally tame the issue, but then this would see him steadily drop down in weight. Seeing as he’s spent years attempting to reach the weight that he already has, and has plans to improve even further, losing all of this in order to combat the Gastroparesis doesn’t seem like a smart choice. At present Ryan has no upcoming matches so can afford to take some time out of competition to fix the issue for good, but after recently signing a contract to compete for ONE FC it doesn’t seem likely he’ll want to stay inactive for too long.
Gastroparesis can be a very rough illness. I have lived with it for more than 7 years. If you can see a motility specialist, this is likely your best option. Best wishes to you, Mr. Ryan.
