Gilbert Burns had a difficult time leading up to UFC 283, as he was coming into his fight with Neil Magny having won just one of his last three fights. It all started when Burns had a title-shot against Kamaru Usman and was knocked out in the third round, snapping a six fight winning streak that led up to that. Burns got back in the win-column quickly at UFC 264 against Stephen Thompson but faltered in his very next fight against Khamzat Chimaev. It was a close match but in the end, the judges sided with Chimaev and Burns’ professional MMA record dropped to 20-5.

Burns has been vocal about wanting a rematch against Chimaev, although it seems like UFC matchmakers had other ideas. Instead of getting the five-round rematch that he had asked for, Gilbert Burns was booked against Neil Magny at UFC 283 in a three-round fight. Burns came out strong and landed his first takedown with ease, immediately putting his world-class Jiu-Jitsu skills to good work. He was exercising patient top control and dominating the fight as he transitioned to mount, locking up an arm-triangle choke as soon as Magny’s arm was outstretched. From there Burns squeezed and forced his opponent to tap, getting the first-round finish and edging that little bit closer to the rematch he asked for against Khamzat Chimaev.
