Georges St-Pierre was reportedly scheduled to compete against Nick Diaz in a grappling match that has sadly now been postponed due to injuries suffered by both parties. The match was supposed to happen at an upcoming UFC Fight Pass Invitational event that was scheduled for some time in December but now take place at an as yet unconfirmed date in the future. St-Pierre’s return to combat sports had already been announced by the promotion earlier in the year, although they hadn’t officially confirmed who his opponent would be.
There were no shortage of options available of course, as multiple MMA and BJJ legends were eager to meet St-Pierre on the mats in his first professional grappling match in over 18 years. A number of different competitors threw their hat in the ring and St-Pierre himself confirmed that he was given a number of different options by the brains behind UFC Fight Pass. Now it seems as though a match had actually been agreed, and it would have been a rematch of one of the biggest fights of St-Pierre’s MMA career.
Georges St-Pierre was the reigning UFC welterweight world champion back in 2013 and Nick Diaz had only recently re-joined the promotion after a stint as the Strikeforce welterweight world champion. The pair met at UFC 158 with St-Pierre’s title on the line and he successfully defended it by beating Diaz by unanimous decision. There was plenty of animosity between the two men and a grappling match between them likely would have garnered a lot of attention, but sadly this wasn’t meant to be just yet.
MMA journalist Aaron Bronsteter announced the news that Georges St-Pierre and Nick Diaz had agreed to a grappling match at a UFC Fight Pass Invitational event but it has been postponed due to injury in a recent post to his official Twitter account:
Just spoke with Georges St-Pierre, who revealed that he had agreed to face Nick Diaz in his grappling bout at the UFC Fight Pass Invitational in December.
Unfortunately, both suffered injuries recently and it has been postponed.
