Garry Tonon returned to professional MMA at ONE Fight Night 6 for the first time since he suffered a brutal knockout loss at the hands of Thanh Le. That fight marked the first time that Tonon had lost an MMA fight and the American grappling star was eager to get back in the ONE Championship cage to right the ship. There was undoubtedly plenty of easy matchups that Tonon could have chosen for his return fight, but instead he accepted a fight against the dangerous Johnny Nunez at the promotion’s first event for 2023. When the pair actually met in the cage, the fight was remarkably one-sided however and Tonon was able to show the incredible depth in his grappling game.
Tonon latched on to a kimura grip from the standing position and used it to send Nunez flying to the mat. From there, Tonon used the leverage that the cage offered him to maintain control over Nunez’s arm and retain top position. Once he had him controlled and the kimura grip locked in tight, it was only a matter of seconds before he was able to drive Nunez’s arm behind his back and force him to tap. After the stunning first-round submission win at ONE Fight Night 6, Garry Tonon now holds a professional MMA record of 7-1 and has put his name back at the top of the list for title contention in the promotion’s featherweight division. He wasn’t the only grappler to put on an incredible performance either, as Mikey Musumeci dominated Gantamur Bayanduuren in his defense of the ONE Championship Flyweight Submission Grappling belt.
