The IBJJF Indianapolis Open 2024 took place on March 9th and 10th, 2024 and there were quite a few slick submission finishes and entertaining matches taking place at the event. There weren’t too many female BJJ black belts competing at the event though, so there wasn’t a single no gi match at that level taking place and only a handful of gi matches. This meant that the majority of the high-level grappling took place in the men’s divisions instead, but at least there was plenty of entertaining battles between top competitors to be found across the different weight classes.
Adam Wardzinski managed to emerge as the double champion in the gi on the first day, as he won both the heavyweight division and the absolute division. He had to beat some tough competition in order to stand on top of the podium twice, particularly in the absolute division where Marcos Carrozzino won a silver medal and the bronze medal went to Clay Mayfield. Mayfield was fresh off a good in performance in his own weight class, as he won gold at medium-heavyweight earlier in the day. Emilio Hernandez made an appearance too, but he had to settle for silver medals in the gi at light-featherweight and in the no gi featherweight division.
Hernandez lost out to Valor Boyer in his no gi division, one of several members of the Movement Art team who earned a place on the podium. His teammate Nick Salles actually won two gold medals by emerging victorious at lightweight both in the gi and in no gi, and he shared the final of his gi division with another teammate as Danny Maira occupied the second spot on the podium in that weight class. David Garmo was the last big name to compete on the second day of the IBJJF Indianapolis Open 2024, as he won the no gi medium-heavyweight bracket.
