The IBJJF Phoenix Open 2024 took place on August 10th and 11th, 2024 and there were some great grapplers hitting the mats. The no gi divisions weren’t anywhere near as busy as the gi divisions, but Lucas Norat was among the few competitors who did make a solid appearance. Norat won both the super-heavyweight and absolute divisions, the latter he won by beating the ultra-heavyweight gold medalist Austin Baker in the final. Norat actually did very well on the first day in the gi too, as he won the super-heavyweight division there and left with a bronze medal in the absolute division.
Oilson Alvim Junior was the absolute champion in the gi, and he was given a default gold medal from the heavyweight division just before. He shared the absolute final with his Alliance Jiu-Jitsu teammate, the default ultra-heavyweight winner Marcus Ribeiro. There was even more action in the lighter weight classes, with Ares BJJ sending multiple elite competitors. Alef Brito won gold at medium-heavyweight, while Danilo Moreira managed to emerge victorious against Guilherme Fernandes in order to win the lightweight division. Keven Carrasco also stood on the podium while flying the Ares BJJ flag, and he actually had to beat tough opposition from Roiter Lima to win at light-featherweight.
Top Art of Jiu-Jitsu competitor Jordan Vaisman also impressed on the first day of the IBJJF Phoenix Open 2024, as he won gold in the featherweight division. The women’s divisions saw Andreza Morais picked up a few medals for Ares BJJ as well, with a default silver in the gi lightweight division and a pair of default golds in no gi as she was the only black belt female competitor. She was beaten by Yasmyn Castro in the gi, and as the only other female black belt on that day she took home a second gold medal by default in the absolute.
