The IBJJF Brasilia Open took place from November 30th to December 1st, 2024 and the event attracted some of the best grapplers from around Brazil. Antonio Braga Neto was one of the biggest winners of the weekend, as he came away with three medals across both days. Neto won the gi ultra-heavyweight division first and returned on the second day to take home a bronze medal from his no gi weight class, before returning to form by winning the no gi absolute division. The only man to beat him over the whole weekend was the eventual winner of the no gi ultra-heavyweight division, Alexandre Seixas.
The other men’s absolute champion over course of the weekend was Windson Torres, as he won the gi absolute after also standing on top of the podium at super-heavyweight. There weren’t as many competitors in the women’s divisions unfortunately, with no black belts at all competing in no gi and no matches as a result. The only female absolute champion of the weekend was Welma Moreira, as she continued her fantastic run of recent performances. Moreira defeated veteran contender Amanda Magda in the only match of the heavyweight division, before beating the super-heavyweight winner Marina Carraro in the final of the absolute.
There were a few other notable names competing in their respective weight classes too, with Leonardo Goncalves putting in a great performance to win the no gi super-heavyweight division. He wasn’t the only one who stood out though, as Anderson Duarte won the gi featherweight division and Andressa Tolentino won the women’s gi lightweight division. Top prospect Wesley Felix continued his great run since his recent black belt promotion too, winning the heavyweight division and coming away with a silver medal behind Neto in the absolute. As always with any Brazilian event, there were tons of talented gi competitors at the IBJJF Brasilia Open 2024 and plenty of tough matches to be had.
