Eddie Bravo just revealed some insider information on Garry Tonon, explaining that he might be making the transition to the UFC. Although Tonon is known more for his success as a grappler, he’s also been building an impressive professional MMA career since 2018. He made his debut at a ONE Championship event and has stuck with the Asian MMA promotion ever since, racking up a solid 9-1 record in their featherweight division. It’s been a solid career so far for Tonon and he’s built a reputation as an exciting fighter, with all but one of his fights ending in a finish.
Tonon’s grappling appearances have become less frequent as his MMA career has progressed of course, although he did enjoy his best ADCC run in 2019 when he was already 5-0. He’s only had a total of four grappling matches since winning that bronze medal in the under 77kg division, but he has had five MMA fights. Tonon has beaten almost everyone that ONE Championship has put in front of him and his only loss came against Thanh Le when he challenged for the promotion’s featherweight title. He’s since bounced back from that and won his last two fights in a row, putting him in the running for a second title-shot.
If Garry Tonon was to move to the UFC then he’d likely be matched up against fighters that are lower in the rankings, and earn his title-shot with a few wins in there first. It would undoubtedly be interesting for the fans though of course, as there are plenty of interesting matchups waiting for him in the UFC featherweight division. Eddie Bravo even mentioned this when he revealed that Tonon might be heading there, along with something that might prevent the move:
“Garry Tonon man, I talked to him not too long ago and he said that there’s a chance that he might go into the UFC but ONE Championship can match the offer. They have the option to match it or whatever. But can you imagine Garry Tonon against these f***ing Russians man?!”
