Eddie Bravo has announced that he will now be hosting the first ever official EBI Open Tournament in El Paso, Texas on June 17, 2024. It’s an interesting move by the promotion, as they have historically focused on professional tournaments that run on an invitation-only basis and qualifying tournaments for competitors to earn one of those invitations. This has been the case ever since the very first EBI event back in 2014 and the promotion has never decided to venture into this world before, although they wouldn’t be the first professional promotion to do so. Just recently in fact, Polaris also announced that they would be hosting their first Pro-Am tournaments in 2024 as well.
Just like IBJJF and ADCC Open tournaments, this will feature divisions for adult, masters, and kids BJJ competitors of all ranks from white through to black belt. The only difference is that this will obviously take place under the unique EBI Overtime ruleset that Bravo first devised a little over a decade ago. In fact, this tournament isn’t the only thing that will mark the ten-year anniversary of the debut of the Eddie Bravo Invitational either. The promotion is also putting together a stacked absolute tournament for EBI 21 just two weeks prior to the Open tournament, on the exact date that EBI 1 took place.
Bravo actually announced the news that the first official EBI Open tournament will take place later this year during the live broadcast of the Combat Jiu-Jitsu Featherweight World Championship 2024, in between the final rounds of the tournament. That is one of the other two major professional grappling promotions that Bravo has created over the years, and the Combat Jiu-Jitsu ruleset is also a popular one. It’ll be interesting to see if this first EBI Open tournament leads to more in the future, or if it encourages Bravo and his team to start doing official CJJ Open tournaments as well.
