Both the dates and the location for the IBJJF Brasileiro 2024, or the IBJJF Brazilian National Championship, have now been announced and the event will take place from April 20th to 28th, 2024. As always, this will be one of the biggest gi grappling events of the year and it represents one of the four tournaments that make up the IBJJF majors. This year it has been scheduled to take place in the Ginásio Poliesportivo José Correa in Barueri, Sao Paulo once again, the same venue that the tournament has used since 2013.
As always it will include all colored belt divisions for juvenile, adult, and master competitors to compete in but there will not be any children’s divisions available, as these will be conducted on a separate date. Naturally, the IBJJF Brasileiro always attracts more Brazilian competitors than any other nationality and they have historically dominated the podium placements across all divisions. As the years have gone on, the sport has spread all across the world and the number of champions from other countries has grown at an incredible rate.
It took 11 editions of the tournament before the first non-Brazilian champion was crowned, with Rafael Lovato Jr winning the super-heavyweight division in 2007. Mackenzie Dern then became the first non-Brazilian woman to win the tournament years later, as she took gold at featherweight in 2014. Fast forward to today and there have now been several men and women from outside Brazil who have won gold medals at the tournament, with that list growing every year. It’ll be interesting to see if any new names can join that list in 2024, and who will be pursuing the coveted IBJJF Grand Slam after winning the other major events leading up to this.
The IBJJF announced both the date and location for the Brasileiro 2024 in a recent post to their official Instagram account:
