Craig Jones has just announced the full list of techniques that will be banned at CJI 2 and it looks as though this will be one of the least restricted events around. There are a few techniques that are often banned due to their perceived risk, like Kani Basami or jumping to closed guard, but these are going to be perfectly legal at CJI 2. Instead, the only things that would result in a disqualification are all well outside the realm of legitimate grappling attacks. It’s not entirely clear whether doing them would lead to an immediate disqualification or a warning first, but all competitors should be avoiding them regardless.
The first thing that fans won’t be seeing at CJI 2 is spiking, which is where an athlete lifts his opponent into the air and drops him on his head. The risk of injury is massive so this is banned in virtually every promotion for good reason, but interestingly there’s no mention of slamming being banned at all. Next up on the list is eye gouging and fish hooking, which involve using your fingers to attack the opponent’s eyes and mouth. Hair, ear, amd finger pulling are also banned; which again brings CJI 2 in line with every grappling event in the world.
Jones also explains that groin shots and strikes of any kind are also banned, something that happens surprisingly often in professional grappling considering that they are banned in every major event outside Combat Jiu-Jitsu. Finally; scratching, pinching, and biting are all banned as well. Although there are plenty of banned techniques at CJI 2 that really do go without saying, what’s more interesting is the ones that didn’t make the list. With slamming, jumping to closed guard, and Kani Basami all presumably allowed then it’s likely that fans will get to see them in action at least once as the event unfolds.
