UFC superstar Conor McGregor has just registered for a local Grappling Industries BJJ tournament in London, United Kingdom on March 18th, 2023. While the elite MMA fighter himself hasn’t made any announcement that he will be competing at the event, he appears to be signed up to the tournament. There is a Conor McGregor signed up to compete in the mixed brown and black belt adult no gi division at 185lbs, and all of the details entered match that of the MMA veteran.
The belt level is correct, the entry is under the SBG Ireland just like McGregor, and the age and nationality both match too. Even the weight would be approximately correct given that McGregor has famously competed at both 155lbs and 170lbs during the most recent fights of his MMA career. While he is undoubtedly known as a striker during his time as a UFC fighter, he has been able to compete on the ground against much more experienced grapplers and he has competed in BJJ tournaments at the coloured belt levels previously too. His ability on the ground has had some high praise during his career as well, as Gilbert Burns previously said that McGregor’s grappling is underrated.
It would make some sense for Conor McGregor to enter a relatively low-stakes BJJ tournament like a local Grappling Industries event too, as he’s gearing up for his return to professional MMA competition. Other popular UFC competitors like Sean O’Malley have competed at Grappling Industries events before, and Jon Jones has taken to the mats for a local NAGA tournament as well. Fans of McGregor won’t have to wait long to see him in action even after this tournament too, as he will be coaching opposite Michael Chandler on the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter.
