Combat Sports Coverage 28 took place on August 3rd, 2024 and the promotion put together a fantastic night of action-packed grappling matches that produced great results for the fans. There was originally supposed to be two tournaments booked for the event but the men’s 185lbs tournament was the only one that went ahead as planned. There was plenty of fireworks as the bracket unfolded; particularly from Caleb Crump, who won his first three matches in very impressive fashion in order to book his place in the final. Top B-Team Jiu-Jitsu prospect Nick Mataya did exactly the same, winning three matches against high-level grapplers in order to meet Crump there.
Mataya beat Crump in the final to finish his run at the tournament with a perfect 4-0 record, signalling that he’s a top competitor in his own right. Mataya also left with the promotion’s under 185lbs title and the $1,000 grand prize; not bad at all for one night’s work. Honorable mentions go to Henrique Camargo and Nick Ortiz, both of whom made solid runs in a very tough tournament bracket. Once the tournament had finished, there was also a 230lbs title-fight between Nonso Ebede and Scotty P. Ebede came out on top after almost 12 minutes of action, securing a takedown in overtime to win the title.
The women’s 125lbs tournament was struck by several pullouts unfortunately and after some rearrangements were made, the promotion managed to put together a superb 125lbs interim championship title match between Melanie Iverson and Martina Zola. Iverson put in an excellent performance to win the match and take home the interim belt, even though Zola made a valiant effort. Iverson will now be facing the promotion’s purple belt superfight champion Taylor Ellis Hishaw for the division’s undisputed title, and that’s a match that is guaranteed to produce fireworks.
There were plenty of slick submission wins in the other superfights building up to the main attractions too, with several exciting competitors looking to make a name for themselves. There was also the matter of a score to be settled between Mike Zarate and John Noriega, as the two had been going back and forth online recently. After a hard exhibition match with plenty of scrappy moments, the two men had put their issues to rest in the cage.
