Combat Jiu-Jitsu Worlds Team Duel saw four teams of five elite grapplers meet on the mats to produce a night of exciting results this past weekend. There were a number of impressive performances right from the start, with some of the athletes on losing teams standing out the most. Both Kaleio Romero and Isaac Thomson looked like fantastic young prospects in their matches against Kieran Kichuk and Damien Anderson respectively, and no doubt there will be a fair amount of attention on the Team Alpha Male products throughout their MMA careers. Dorian Olivarez looked incredible in his match with Trent Ebarb, locking up a north-south choke to help put B-Team through to the final.
On the other side of the bracket, Jesus Magana announced his arrival to the professional grappling scene by submitting Jordan Wirth but he was drowned out by Tenth Planet’s key player in the opening round, Ben Eddy. Eddy and Mike John combined to bring Tenth Planet victory against Combat Jiu-Jitsu Mexico, with both men managing to register two submissions in their matches. The final was something of an anti-climax, with all five matches ending in a draw and the whole tournament coming down to Dorian Olivarez and Mike John in EBI Overtime. Mike John won the overtime exchange and sealed the victory for Tenth Planet Jiu-Jitsu.
The main event of the night then saw an interesting match as UFC legend Urijah Faber faced off against reigning Combat Jiu-Jitsu Bantamweight world champion Elias Anderson. The match had plenty of tough back-and-forth action but eventually went to EBI overtime in order to declare a winner. Anderson chose to start from the spiderweb position and immediately managed to finish the armbar, giving Faber only a handful of seconds to work with. Faber opted to start on the back and couldn’t get anywhere near a choke before his time ran out.
