Cage Warriors 169 took place on March 30th, 2024 and Mitchell Goode made history by becoming the first person to win a fight by Buggy Choke in the promotion’s cage. Although the choke has been steadily gaining in popularity among grapplers, it’s still relatively rare to see one finished in a Jiu-Jitsu match. It’s even rarer still in professional MMA and there have only been a handful of examples anywhere in the world, with almost all of them coming on the regional MMA circuit. It makes sense that it’s not very common too, as most MMA fighters would prefer to stand up or re-guard rather than try to submit their opponent from bottom side control.

Goode chose the unconventional path to victory in his fight against Angus Hewett but it paid off in a huge way, as he found the submission finish with just a little over 30 seconds left on the clock. It wasn’t the first time that he attempted the choke though, as he actually went for it briefly in the both the first and second rounds as well. Both times he chose to transition to a different option though, switching to a sweep the first time and attacking the legs the second. It was clearly a part of Goode’s gameplan on the ground from the start and it made sense, as Hewett looked like he had an advantage in wrestling throughout the fight.

The majority of the fight took place either in the clinch or on the ground, as Hewett was able to take Goode down multiple times in each round. The issue had was controlling him after the takedown though, as Goode was offensive off his back every time and prevented him from causing much damage. Hewett was still likely winning both rounds on the judge’s scorecards though, or at least the first. The third round started with Hewett getting the takedown again but this time he was able to get to mount and threaten Goode with a rear-naked choke once he turned his back. Goode escaped with a minute left to change his fortune and he threw the buggy choke out once again, except this time he was able to lock it up and get the finish.
