BJJ Stars 6 was yet another night of high-level grappling action courtesy of the Brazilian promotion, this time headlined by a match between Felipe Pena and Patrick Gaudio. Pena was set to defend the title that he won back at BJJ Stars 5 by beating out a field of elite competitors, including some of the same stepping on the mats tonight like Lucas ‘Hulk’ Barbosa and Yuri Simoes. Gaudio pulled guard early in the match and the pair exchanged sweeps to end up 2-2 on the scoreboard before Pena managed to work his guard-passing game beautifully.

As he passed to side control and advanced to mount, Gaudio started to defend and although he slowed Pena down it resulted in him giving up his back instead. From there, it was only a matter of time before Pena managed to set his grips and finish the fight with a tight lapel choke from the back. The headline match was certainly exciting and Pena built up a lot of anticipation beforehand with an explosive interview where he had some choice words for long-time rival Gordon Ryan, but the co-main event turned out to be the most interesting match of the night.

Lucas ‘Hulk’ Barbosa and Matheus Diniz spent the majority of their match wrestling from the feet with neither man willing to accept bottom position. With about a minute and a half left, Barbosa finally managed to secure the takedown he was looking for and worked to his opponent’s back as Diniz returned to his feet and they had to be reset in the centre. Barbosa managed to land another takedown and this time maintain control to earn 2 points with around a minute left in the match.

With seconds to go, Diniz landed a beautiful armdrag and took Barbosa’s back to immediately attempt a choke. The buzzer sounded and just before Barbosa was declared the winner on points, it was revealed that he’d actually been put to sleep by the choke and there was huge debate as to whether he had gone out before or after the match had ended. After some discussion, the officials determined that Barbosa had made it to the buzzer fully conscious and he was awarded the controversial victory on points.
