BJJ Stars 12 took place on April 27th, 2024 and the promotion’s stacked medium-heavyweight grand prix delivered a ton of action as the results unfolded. Although the tournament looked as though it would be close on paper, one competitor absolutely dominated once the action actually began. Uanderson Ferreira impressed on one side of the bracket by submitting Mauricio Oliveira and getting a huge upset points win over Gustavo Batista to get to the final. Fellipe Andrew stormed through the other side by submitting Leonardo Lara in the opening round and racked up a huge 11 point lead against Isaque Bahiense to meet Ferreira in the final match of the night.
In the end it was Andrew who emerged victorious in the grand finale, as he secured his second submission win of the night over Ferreira and won a major event at a lower weight class than he normally competes in. A few more titles were on the line at BJJ Stars 12, and the results saw two elite female competitors leave with titles around their waist. Julia Alves was first up and she won a tough match for the lightweight title against Luiza Monteiro, narrowly beating her by just two points scored in the final seconds of the match. The second title-fight was for the featherweight belt and Anna Rodrigues successfully defended her title by beating Ana Schmitt on points in a solid performance.
There only other title-fight was in the men’s middleweight master division, and Piter Frank registered an upset win over Celso ‘Celsinho’ Vinicius by scoring 2 points in the dying seconds of the match. It was a controversial decision, as the points weren’t awarded originally but the referees looked at the instant replay and decided to award them at the end of the match. That led straight into the co-main event, where Meyram Maquine and Samuel Nagai put on one of the most exciting matches of the year so far. Maquine racked up an early lead before Nagai launched into a comeback that involved him scoring 2 points and 2 advantages, but it wasn’t enough to make up the deficit and he lost by a single advantage.
