Elite BJJ competitor Beatriz ‘Bia’ Mesquita is now going to make her professional MMA debut at Spaten Fight Night on June 15th, 2024. Mesquita is not just any top grappler of course, she’s actually the most successful female competitor in IBJJF history with ten IBJJF World Championship gold medals to her name. She has been a dominant force at the highest level of the sport for well over a decade at this point, as her first world title came all the way back in 2012. Since then, Mesquita has won the lightweight division 8 times and has even won a pair of absolute titles despite being one of the lightest women in the bracket.
Mesquita’s success over the years hasn’t been limited to gi competition either, as she has won five IBJJF No Gi World Championship gold medals over that time as well. She even added an ADCC world title to her extensive collection back in 2017 and won a bronze medal as recently as 2022. As Mesquita transitions over to MMA, she will undoubtedly have the grappling advantage over pretty much everyone she could possibly face. Nowhere is that more obvious than in her professional debut, as Beatriz ‘Bia’ Mesquita has been booked against a striker who has also never had an MMA fight before.
Her opponent at Spaten Fight Night will be Jorgina Ramos, a boxing and kickboxing veteran with plenty of striking experience behind her. Mesquita has been working on her striking for years now in advance of her MMA debut and Ramos has spent time developing her grappling, but this is still a classic striker vs grappler matchup. Both women have a clear path to victory if they can keep the fight in their area of expertise and it’ll be interesting to see how Mesquita fares when faced with a challenge like this in her new sport.
There are some other interesting fights booked for Spaten Fight Night too, including one of the most surprising main event matches imaginable. Anderson Silva will be continuing his boxing career by taking on his old foe Chael Sonnen in a rematch of their first fight that took place at UFC 148 over a decade ago. Silva’s son Kalyl will also be competing in a boxing match at the event, as he looks to continue the fantastic start he’s enjoyed in his professional career. Kalyl Silva is currently 2-0 and he’ll be the favorite coming into his fight with Paulo Roberto, who currently owns a 4-24-1 professional MMA record and a 0-1 boxing record.
