Andre Galvao has now become the second competitor to be inducted into the ADCC Hall of Fame after it was just recently created, and he will be joining fellow BJJ legend Roger Gracie. It makes perfect sense of course, seeing as Galvao is the most decorated athlete in ADCC history. He started his career for the promotion with a pair of bronze medals in 2007 but was quickly able to improve upon that tally by earning a silver medal in 2009 and since then, he has not lost a single match at the ADCC world championships. In 2011, Andre Galvao joined the ranks of double champions by defeating eight of the world’s best grapplers in both the 88kg division and the absolute division.
Galvao challenged fellow double champion Braulio Estima for the superfight championship at the following edition in 2013 and he submitted him with a rear-naked choke to take home the crown. He returned in 2015 to successfully defend the superfight title against Roberto ‘Cyborg’ Abreu before breaking the record for superfight wins in 2017 by outworking Claudio Calasans too. He took his number of superfight wins to four in 2019 when he managed to defeat Felipe Pena on points, ensuring that any potential future superfight champion will need to be at the top of his game for more than a decade in order to break his record.
Although he was initially debating retiring from the sport, Andre Galvao has since announced that he will be returning to defend his superfight championship once again at the 2022 ADCC world championships. He’s spent a long time turning back all challengers but may actually be facing one of his toughest opponents yet as he steps on to the mats across from Gordon Ryan, with oddsmakers predicting him to be the underdog. Despite being over 40 years old, Galvao will be looking to put on an impressive performance once again and amazingly, he’ll also be training to make a return to the cage as well, having recently signed a multi-fight deal to make his MMA comeback for ONE FC.
Andre Galvao had his induction to the ADCC Hall of Fame announced by the promotion in a post to their official Instagram:
And, what here ridiculous?
