AJ Agazarm has just revealed that he was actually supposed to be the man coaching opposite Mikey Musumeci during the upcoming UFC BJJ 1 show. Agazarm might not have been the most popular choice among grappling fans but it’s undeniable that he brings a ton of name recognition to the show. The promotion obviously went in a different direction in the end, as they announced the full cast for the inaugural season and Agazarm was nowhere to be found. Instead, the man standing opposite Musumeci as the other coach for the show’s debut season is a relatively new black belt; Rerisson Gabriel.
Although Gabriel is an excellent grappler who already holds wins over some impressive names, he isn’t the most well-known bantamweight grappler. That’s actually one area that Agazarm would have had an advantage over him, and the other is in their ability to create content. Agazarm has gotten in to several beefs with other competitors over the years and he’s often found a way to make headlines at the events he competes in. From refusing to leave the mat until he was awarded points at ADCC 2022 to almost getting into a fight with Jake Shields at Polaris, Agazarm often becomes part of some of the most memorable moments.
It’s hard to imagine AJ Agazarm getting through a whole week of coaching against Musumeci at UFC BJJ 1 without delivering a couple of viral moments, so it seems surprising that they would pass up on that opportunity. Agazarm revealed that thid is exactly what happened though, and he made the revelation in a recent story to his official Instagram account:
Agazarm didn’t stop there though, he took things another step further and actually shared the proof as well. It’s a conversation between Agazarm and an unnamed person, where they are discussing an event spanning the same dates as UFC BJJ 1. They also reference Stephen Tecci, the Vice President of UFC Fight Pass, so it seems pretty clear what they’re talking about:
