The first ever ADCC Canada Open took place on April 23rd, 2023 and the results of the tournament feature some of the most talented and exciting grapplers from across North America and beyond. ADCC Open events have quickly become incredibly popular, and this one was no exception. The vast majority of divisions were stacked with tons of grapplers and there was some incredible talent on display in the advanced ones. Deandre Corbe stood out in the lighter weightclasses, as he won four matches with two submissions to take gold in the under 70kg division.
Michael Demers pulled off a fantastic performance in the under 76kg division, winning two matches before defeating Pierre-Olivier Leclerc by decision and submitting Kieran Kichuk in the final. Maxim Cote reconfirmed his place at the top of the Canadian pecking order in his division by winning gold at 83kg, but the best male competitor undoubtedly came from Dan Manasoiu. He won an incredible 9 matches across the over 100kg and absolute divisions without conceding a single point, securing 7 submission wins and bringing two gold medals back to New Wave Jiu-Jitsu.
In the women’s divisions, the young purple belt Maggy Meier made a huge statement in the under 60kg division by submitting two out of three of her opponents and taking home the gold medal. Although Siobhan Barnes only had one match to win gold at under 70kg, she had many more in front of her to win the absolute division and ended up finishing the day with 5 wins, 4 submissions, and 2 gold medals.
