The IBJJF Memphis and Albuquerque Opens 2025 both took place on the same weekend, attracting several top competitors on February 15th and 16th, 2025. There wasn’t quite as many big names in Memphis, and the women’s divisions there were pretty thin. The gi absolute division there was won by Guilherme Augusto, shortly after he took a default gold at ultra-heavyweight. He didn’t compete in no gi though, so that absolute division was won by Clay Mayfield instead. Mayfield actually got a default silver medal in his weight class in the gi too, as he lost the only match in the division to Felipe Anibal.
Emilio Hernandez also hit the mats in both the gi and no gi divisions in Memphis, standing on the podium in both. He won the gi featherweight division and got a default gold in the no gi equivalent, along with a bronze medal in the no gi absolute. The IBJJF Albuquerque Open 2025 did attract a few more top competitors than Memphis did, but one man in particular stood out the most. Roberto Jimenez left with an incredible tally of four gold medals, submitting all 7 of his opponents to win the heavyweight and absolute divisions in both gi and no gi.
Danilo Moreira won gold in the lightweight gi division by beating Joao Assonitis before getting a default gold in no gi, while Assonitis returned for another silver medal in the gi absolute. The gi middleweight division was won by Alef Brito and Wellington ‘Megaton’ Dias also made an appearance, but he had no opponents and was given a default gold at medium-heavyweight. Deise Leonanjo won double gold in the gi, sharing the final of the heavyweight and absolute divisions with her teammate and double silver medalist Gabi Schuck. The women’s brackets also featured Amber Rymarz-Freitas, but she couldn’t get a match and was given a pair of default golds at roosterweight.
