The IBJJF New York Spring Open 2024 took place across the weekend of April 6th and 7th, 2024, and there were several elite competitors stepping on the mats. Fellipe Andrew in particular put on a flawless performance on the first day during the gi brackets, as he managed to win both the heavyweight and absolute divisions. He wasn’t the only one who left with a pair of gold medals on that day though, as Vannessa Griffin also won the absolute division after standing on top of the medium-heavyweight podium. There was only one other double champion to emerge at the event, as there wasn’t enough female competitors to run any black belt matches in no gi.

Gianni Grippo shocked the crowd by becoming the lightest absolute champion of the weekend, as he won that division in no gi after taking gold at lightweight earlier in the day. Luan Gomes da Silva took the silver medal in that no gi lightweight division, and he won gold in the gi featherweight division on the previous day. There was another great matchup in the gi middleweight division, as Natan Chueng managed to beat JT Torres in the final to take home the title. Sebastian Rodriguez won the medium-heavyweight division after overcoming fellow top grappler Felipe Cesar in the final, another of the exciting matches from the IBJJF New York Spring Open 2024.

Fellipe Andrew had several good matchups in the gi too, as he had to beat Sean Yadimarco in the final of his weight class and Sebastian Rodriguez in the final of the absolute. Yan Paiva occupied the third position on the absolute podium, shortly after he won a default gold medal at super-heavyweight. The women’s divisions had some good matches too, with Jessica Crane beating Thais Teixeira to win the featherweight title. Crane returned to take a silver medal in the absolute division, while the bronze medal was won by Suellen Lima after she got a default gold at lightweight.
