ONE 171 took place on February 20th, 2025 and the event saw Zayed Alkatheeri making his ONE Championship debut. Not only is Alkatheeri an incredible grappler in general but he’s also been making history as the most successful competitor to date to come out of the UAE. He’s won major tournaments and competed on several big promotions around the world, but this was still going to be one of the biggest crowds that he’s competed in front of. Alkatheeri was originally supposed to face Jarrah Al Hazza at first, but a change of opponent on short notice meant that he was up against Mohammad Aburumuh instead.
Alkatheeri made very short work of his opponent and it only took him a little over two minutes to find the finish in the end. He started out by locking up a triangle choke on Aburumuh, before attacking the arm that was trapped inside the choke. It took a few adjustments but he was able to bend it over his hip and Aburumuh was forced to tap as a result. Alkatheeri wasn’t the only elite grappler competing at ONE 171 though and after he closed off the preliminary card, Kade Ruotolo opened the main card with a dominant submission win of his own.
