Charles Oliveira is one of the greatest submission artists to ever set foot in the octagon and the UFC Lightweight World Champion hasn’t just been competing without the gi on. Oliveira has not only reached the highest levels of MMA competition by fighting for and winning a UFC title, but he also holds the records for both the highest number of finishes and the highest number of submission wins. It should come as no surprise that Oliveira has plenty of experience in the gi as well, considering that he was last promoted to third degree black belt in BJJ early in 2021.
Oliveira won his world title in the UFC Lightweight division in stunning fashion by knocking out Michael Chandler early in the second round of their fight. Since then, he has defended that title against Dustin Poirier and racked up another finish by submitting him in the third round, before being scheduled to take on Justin Gaethje at UFC 274. Unfortunately for Oliveira, he missed weight by just half a pound for this fight and was stripped of his title as a result. This didn’t seem to phase him once the cage door was closed however as he made incredibly short work of Gaethje and submitted him in just a little over three minutes of the very first round.
He is currently riding an incredible streak of eleven straight finishes dating all the way back to 2018 and he is the clear obvious choice to fight for the vacant Lightweight title against the next contender. Charles Oliveira has looked unstoppable both on the feet and on the ground in recent years, and it’s not hard to see why when looking at the footage of him competing in the gi against fellow BJJ black belts.
