Sean O’Malley recently went viral for choking out a popular YouTube star, Vic Blends, incredibly quickly during a friendly sparring match. Although the former UFC champion has always been known for his striking above all else, he has developed some impressive grappling skills over the years as well. He only has one submission win on his record and it dates back to 2015 when he was still fighting on the regional MMA circuit, but that’s partially because the level of opponent he faces has increased at the same time his skills have. He was promoted to brown belt in BJJ in 2021, but he was already multiple fights into his UFC career at that point.
The highest point of O’Malley’s career so far came in 2023, when he won the UFC bantamweight world championship by knocking out Aljamain Sterling. The title-reign ensured that he would have a place in the promotion’s history books, even though it was relatively short-lived. O’Malley had one successful title-defense against Marlon Vera at UFC 299, a fight that also allowed him to avenge the only loss of his professional MMA career at that point. In his very next fight, he lost a convincing unanimous decision to Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 309 and his time as the bantamweight world champion came to an end.
He hasn’t returned to action yet, but he’s still been pretty busy developing his skills and building his brand as a fighter. One of those promotional efforts saw Sean O’Malley doing an interview with YouTube star Vic Blends, although it didn’t quite go as planned. Blends is eager to find out just how quickly the former champion can submit him, and he thinks that he can last around 30 seconds grappling with him. O’Malley isn’t so confident in Blends’ chances and he thinks that he won’t last 10 seconds, so the two men set out to find out who is actually right.
